Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing

The Advanced Qualification for Qualified Stylists Ready to Go Further

This 10-week advanced course is for qualified hairdressers who want to develop more advanced skills and earn an internationally recognised Level 3 qualification. You’ll concentrate on the creative side of the industry, including creative cutting, advanced colour techniques, colour correction and creative long hair work – building on the foundation you already have and pushing your abilities further. The course includes VTCT online testing, and on completion you’ll hold both an Alan d and VTCT Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing.

We have been training hairdressers and barbers for over 60 years. The academy is located right in the heart of the City, and the training environment mirrors a real working salon. At Level 3, the focus is on refining your technique and developing the creative confidence to work at a higher level.

This course is not for beginners. It’s for stylists who already hold a Level 2 qualification, have proven salon experience, and are ready to take the next step in their career.

What You’ll Learn

Teaching Approach

At Level 3, the teaching approach shifts. You already know how to cut and colour. This programme is about developing creative confidence and advanced technical skills. You’ll spend the first week working on our Foundation Cutting System to establish the academy’s approach, then move straight on to live models for the rest of the course. The emphasis is on creative work – the kind of cutting, colouring and styling that separates a competent stylist from one who can genuinely create.

Mandatory Units

The qualification is built around four mandatory units that every student must complete:

  • Creatively style and dress hair
  • Creatively cut hair using a combination of techniques
  • Creatively colour and lighten hair
  • Provide client consultation services

These units cover the core advanced skills, including creative cutting techniques that go beyond the basics, advanced colour application, including more complex colouring work, creative long hair styling, and the higher-level consultation skills you need when working with clients on more ambitious looks.

Optional Units

In addition to the four mandatory units, you’ll choose several optional units in discussion with your trainer to make up the required credits for the complete qualification. The options are:

  • Hair colour correction services
  • Cut men’s hairstyles
  • Create a variety of permed effects
  • Fulfil salon reception duties

This flexibility lets you tailor the qualification to your career goals. If you want to specialise in colour, colour correction is the obvious choice. If you want to be able to work on men’s hair at an advanced level, you can add that. Your trainer will help you decide which combination makes most sense for where you want to go.

Course Structure

Week one of the course is spent working on the Alan d Foundation Cutting System.  You’ll be getting familiar with the academy’s approach and techniques. From week two onwards, you’re working on live models, completing your mandatory units and your chosen optional units under assessment conditions. The pace depends partly on your own speed of learning and the combination of optional units you choose, but your trainers are there to keep you on track throughout.

Hands-On Experience

This is an advanced course, so the hands-on element is intensive from the start. After the first week on the Foundation Cutting System, you’re working on live models from our model bank for the remainder of the programme. At this level, you’re working on more complex briefs, with clients who want creative cuts, advanced colour work, or colour corrections. It’s where you develop the creative judgement and technical precision that define a senior stylist.

Assessment

This is a VTCT qualification. You’ll be assessed on live models across the mandatory and chosen optional units. The course includes VTCT online tests throughout to check your knowledge. Your trainers monitor your progress and provide ongoing feedback. Once you’ve completed the course successfully, you’ll receive the VTCT and Alan d Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing.

What You’ll Achieve

Your Qualification

It’s the qualification that positions you as a senior stylist and opens doors to more advanced roles in the industry.

Skills You’ll Develop

By the end of this course, you’ll have advanced your cutting, colouring and styling skills significantly beyond Level 2. You’ll be able to create more ambitious looks, handle complex colour work (including colour correction if you choose that unit), and style long hair creatively for events and occasions. Many stylists at this level also move into hairdressing education or become assessors, training the next generation of hairdressers.
