Masterclass Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing & Barbering
The Complete Qualification for Working in a Unisex Salon
This 26-week Masterclass is the most comprehensive beginners’ programme we offer. It combines the full Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing with the Level 2 NVQ in Barbering, giving you everything you need to work confidently on both ladies’ and men’s hair. You’ll cover cutting, colouring, perming, styling, setting, and long hair work on the hairdressing side, then move into barbering techniques, including scissor and clipper work, fading, beard shaping, and wet shaving.
On completion, you’ll hold both an Alan d and VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing and Barbering. The qualifications open doors to unisex salons, barbershops, freelance work and even cruise ships.
We’ve been training hairdressers and barbers for over 60 years. We’re located centrally in the City of London, in a training environment that mirrors a real working salon. You’ll start on mannequins to build your technique, then progress to live models where your assessments take place.
This course is for people who want the complete package. If you’re serious about building a career that isn’t limited to one side of the salon, this is the programme that gives you both qualifications in a single, structured course.

What You’ll Learn
Teaching Approach
Training with us is hands-on from the start. You’ll be cutting hair by day two. The Masterclass is structured into three clear phases: hairdressing first, then colour, and finally barbering. Each phase builds on the last, and the approach stays the same throughout — essential theory delivered when you need it, then straight into practical work. The bulk of your 26 weeks is spent with hair in your hands, in a training environment that operates like a real salon.
Hairdressing: Cutting & Styling Programme (Weeks 1–5)
During the first 5 weeks we will be focusing on cutting and styling. Here are some of the things we will be covering:
- Our 9 Foundation Haircuts
- Consultation skills: identifying the right shampoo and conditioning products for different hair types
- Shampooing techniques, including professional head massage
- Blow-drying and setting techniques for smooth and curly finishes
- Roller-setting and long hair event styling
- Correct tool selection for each styling technique
- Perming and long-hair styling techniques
- Client care and salon protocol
Hairdressing: Colouring Programme (Weeks 5–9+)
One-day Colour Theory seminar covering the fundamentals of how colour works and how to choose the right product for each client, followed by hands-on application:
- Colour theory fundamentals: understanding different colour types from semi-permanent through to quasi-permanent, lighteners and bleach
- The theory behind colour choice and product selection
- Root coverage techniques
- Full-head colour application
- Foil and highlighting techniques
- Working on mannequin heads before progressing to live models
Barbering Programme (Final 6 Weeks)
Once you’ve completed your hairdressing qualification, you’ll move into the barbering class to learn the techniques that are specific to men’s hair and grooming:
- Scissor and clipper-over-comb techniques
- Use of scissors, clippers and trimmers
- Blending and fading techniques
- Moustache trimming and beard shaping
- Wet shaving techniques
- Creating basic outlines and detailing in hair
- Salon reception duties
Course Structure
The first 5 weeks are spent in the Induction Class, working on mannequin heads to learn the Alan d Foundation Cutting System alongside basic blow-drying, styling and perming techniques. You then move into 4 weeks of colour work, starting with the monthly Colour Theory seminar before progressing through root tints, full-head colours and highlighting. During this time, depending on your own speed of learning, you’ll be assessed across the hairdressing units of the qualification. Once your hairdressing diploma is complete, you’ll spend your final 6 weeks in the barbering class, covering scissor and clipper techniques, fading, blending, beard work and wet shaving, with assessments on live models throughout.
Hands-On Experience
You’ll start by practising on mannequin heads, building technique and muscle memory through repetition across both the hairdressing and barbering phases. Once your trainers are confident in your ability, you’ll move on to live models from our model bank. Working on real clients, with different hair types, textures, conditions and requirements. Your formal assessments are carried out on live models in both disciplines, so by the time you qualify, you’ve proven your skills on real people across both ladies’ and men’s hair.
Assessment
This is a VTCT-regulated qualification. You’ll be assessed across 13 units in total — 8 for hairdressing and 5 for barbering.
Hairdressing Units:

FAQs
No, you don’t need any specific qualifications to take this course. Spoken English is essential, but beyond that, the Masterclass is designed for complete beginners. It’s ideal if you’re looking to be work-ready in both hairdressing and barbering once you’ve completed the programme.
Yes. The Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing and Barbering can be taken part-time. You must attend classes for at least 3 consecutive days per week. This lets you fit your training around other commitments while still maintaining the pace you need to progress.
Yes. This course is approximately 80% practical to get you work-ready. You’ll be cutting and styling hair on day two, then move on to roller-setting, long hair, colouring and perming. To finish, you’ll move into barber training, including scissor and clipper work, beard and moustache trimming, and wet shaving.
Yes. This course is designed to prepare you for work. You’ll hold qualifications in both hairdressing and barbering, which means you could work in a unisex salon, a barbershop, or both. You could also freelance or explore opportunities on cruise ships.
The Masterclass combines both disciplines into a single, structured 26-week programme. It’s designed so the hairdressing phase flows naturally into the barbering phase, and you complete both qualifications in one continuous course. Taking them separately would mean enrolling on the Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing (20 weeks) and then a separate barbering programme, which would take longer overall and cost more.
Yes. For those who already have a hairdressing qualification, we have intermediate hairdressing courses to help you build your confidence on the salon floor. For experienced stylists, we have the Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing.
Yes. We have intermediate barbering courses for those who have had previous barbering training and want to improve their skills. We also have advanced courses such as the Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Barbering and our Wet Shaving Course.
You’re welcome to bring your own kit as long as it’s in good condition. If you don’t have one, professional equipment kits are available to purchase through the academy — and anything you buy is yours to keep.
We require a minimum attendance rate of 80% per week. If you know you’ll be late or absent, you need to notify the academy manager by email or phone no later than 9 am on that day. Repeated unexplained absences can affect your progress and, in serious cases, could result in dismissal from the course without a refund. So we can support you properly, if you have a health issue, ongoing medication, or any personal circumstances that might affect your attendance, it’s worth speaking to the academy manager at the start of your course.
