4 Weeks Comprehensive Hair Colouring Course for Beginners

Add Colour to Your Skillset and Increase Your Earning Potential

This 4-week course is designed for hairdressers who have been trained in cutting but have never covered colour. You’ll start with the fundamentals of colour theory before moving into hands-on application, covering everything from root coverage and full-head colour through to foils and balayage. By the end, you’ll have a full range of colour techniques to offer your clients.

Alan d has been training hairdressers and barbers for over 60 years. The academy sits right in the heart of the City, and the training environment mirrors a real working salon. You’ll start on mannequins to build your confidence and accuracy, then move on to live models once your technique is ready.

This course is for qualified hairdressers who can already cut hair but have little or no colouring experience. If colour has always been a gap in your skill set, this is the course that closes it.

What You’ll Learn

Teaching Approach

Training at Alan d is practical from the start. The course opens with a one-day colour seminar that gives you the theoretical foundation you need, colour types, the science behind colour choice, and how different products work. From day two onwards, the focus shifts entirely to hands-on application. You’ll work through each technique on mannequins first, then progress to live models as your confidence builds. Theory is kept to what’s essential; the rest of your time is spent with colour in your hands.

Curriculum Highlights
Colouring Programme
  • Colour theory fundamentals: understanding different colour types from semi-permanent through to quasi, permanent, lighteners and bleach
  • The theory behind colour choice and how to select the right product for each client
  • Root coverage techniques
  • Full-head colour application
  • Foil techniques
  • Meche application
  • Balayage
  • Working on mannequin heads before progressing to live models
Hands-On Experience

You’ll begin on mannequin heads throughout both the cutting and colouring phases, working through each technique until it feels consistent and natural. Once your trainers are confident in your ability, you’ll move on to live models from Alan d’s diverse model bank. Working on real hair, with different textures, conditions, and starting points, is where the practical understanding really comes together.

Assessment

This is a certificate course. There are no formal exams or online testing. Your trainers monitor your progress throughout the programme, and you’ll receive ongoing feedback as you work through each technique. Upon completion, you’ll receive the Alan d Comprehensive Colouring Certificate.

Academy Expertise

Alan d has over 60 years of combined industry experience training hairdressers and barbers. The academy is a VTCT-approved centre, which means training and assessment meet nationally recognised vocational standards. Class sizes are kept small, typically between 1 and 8 students per instructor, so you’ll get individual attention and personalised feedback throughout your course.

A maximum of 10 learners starts each month, and you’ll be training alongside students on various programmes. This course is taught by all of our educators across both the cutting and colouring phases, all of whom have extensive salon and teaching experience.

FAQs

Yes, our certification is recognised across the Hairdressing industry and is a great asset to your Hairdressing CV.

The aim of this course is to help you learn all about hair colouring, including product knowledge, application techniques, root coverage, full-head colour, foils, meche and balayage.

Not at all. The course is built for hairdressers who know how to cut but haven’t had proper colour training. You’ll cover the full range — from colour theory and product knowledge through to root coverage, foils, meche and balayage. If anything, coming in with salon experience means you’ll pick up the practical side faster than a complete beginner would.

YouTube can show you a technique. It can’t correct your application, tell you why your foils are bleeding, or give you the product knowledge to make confident decisions on a real client. On this course you’re working with professional products in a salon environment, with experienced educators watching your technique and giving you feedback in real time. That’s the difference between knowing what something looks like and actually being able to do it.

You’re welcome to bring your own kit as long as it’s in good condition. If you don’t have one, professional equipment kits are available to purchase through the academy, and anything you buy is yours to keep.

Alan d requires a minimum attendance rate of 80% per week. If you know you’re going to be late or absent, you need to notify the academy manager by email or phone no later than 9am on that day. Repeated unexplained absences can affect your progress and, in serious cases, could result in dismissal from the course without a refund. If you have a health issue or personal circumstances that might affect your attendance, it’s worth speaking to the academy manager at the start of your course so they can support you properly.

You’ll train with salon-only professional brands, the same products you’d find in a working salon. That means by the time you finish the course, you’ll already have hands-on experience with the tools and products you’ll be using professionally.

Most students feel confident enough to start offering colour services straight after completing the course. You’ll have worked on live models before you finish, so you won’t be going in blind. If you want to build further or work towards a nationally recognised qualification, the Level 2 or Level 3 NVQ in Hairdressing are the natural next steps.

You will have the basic knowledge to work on the salon floor. However, you could expand your skillset and take the Level 2 Certificate in Cutting Hair or the Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing. These courses can help you work towards becoming a fully qualified new stylist.
