I’m Just A Hairdresser (Part 2)

I use the hashtag ‘imjustahairdresser’ for all of our social media now. For those that know my sense of humour, you’ll know I’m being sarcastic. For those looking to join the industry and don’t know me, I’ll give you a brief history of my 25-year-and-still-going career being ‘just’ a hairdresser:

  • 1990 Leave school with a couple of A-Levels
  • Join bank
  • Leave bank
  • 1992 Start hairdressing
  • Become stylist
  • Travel the world educating others
  • Run 2 schools
  • Become industry host/compere
  • Teach Presentation Skills
  • Still have a few clients

You get the picture. There is no I’m just a hairdresser about my career. It’s taken me all over the world and I’ve met some incredible people. Since I wrote the first ‘Just a Hairdresser’ blog nearly 6 months ago, I’ve hosted some more incredible events, including an interview with hair entrepreneur Mark Woolley of Electric fame and run a few Presentation Skills classes. I’ve even just been confirmed by the Hairdressers Journal as their Mens Stage host this year at Salon International.

During these events, there has been a clear message from business owners; what’s happening to our industry? Where are the next generation of hairdressers coming from? The kids aren’t motivated anymore etc etc!!

Well let me tell you, based on the event I hosted yesterday and the fashion show that our Academy Principal Kevin worked on last week, you don’t need to worry! The standard of work at both events was fantastic. We saw 30 highly motivated students yesterday starting in the early morning perfecting their looks and the finished creations were amazing. The Daniel Galvin Team also put on a presentation showcasing 2 beautiful commercial looks. Last weekend, Kevin took 11 of our students with him to work on a fashion show. Again it was an early weekend start. No one was late, no one was tired, they were all hungry for more.
